SGNCS Members to Gather in Kuwait for International Symposium

Dozens of SGNCS members will gather in Kuwait this January to explore the theme of "Translation, Transposition, and Travel in the Global Nineteenth Century." Owing to developments in the region, the SGNCS executive council designated this event an international symposium. The rescheduled World Congress will be held later in the year. The symposium will feature over 20 panels on topics ranging from "Travels to and through the Ottoman Empire" to "Exchanges, Independence, and Informal Empire in the Revolutionary Era: Mobility in the Reconfiguration of the World." In addition to plenary addresses by Marwan Kraidy (Northwestern University Qatar) and Sarga Moussa (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle), participants will have the option of participating in a walking tour of pre-oil Kuwait, which covers the nineteenth century, and gain a behind-the-scenes look at the breathtaking Arab Fund building.
